Kinja'd!!!

I have been a little out of the posting for a few days, gearing up to hand the keys to the whip that is the successful department I have built and moving on to better pay and a new experience in work. That aside, and without shit stirring at all, I would just like to bring attention to the amount of drama around here this past month. I mean for this to be a positive post, just to get everyones head on straight. Ok, let's go for it.

Kinja'd!!!

I want to start by saying I love you guys and girls that call themselves Opponauts. This is a great forum for just about anything under the sun. The format that we call Kinja might be lacking in features and polish, but the people here make up for it. Always willing to help each other out with advice, psychiatric help, parts, labor, this thing transcends the internet in a very positive way. Even with regards to the online side of things, the mods and authors donate their time selflessly to making sure we have a public forum here safe from becoming the next (insert heinous hateful car forum here, like VWVortex). This is probably the biggest attraction to me. Sometimes we can get carried away with theme days or the like, but that is still what makes us awesome. Oh and since we are self policing and all we get to live here ad free. The FP gets to sell ad space for more money because of our activity here, and I am cool with that.

Kinja'd!!!

On the other hand, we have alot of mistrust. I mean, this is the internet and all. We get sockpuppeting, trolling, lying and falsifications just like anyone else. I would hate to see our beloved blog platform tear itself apart from our mistrusting of each other. We have had numerous instances of long and short term drama over the past month, and it bums me out. However it seems like the mods are doing a good job of meting out justice, and we will survive. I guess the message I wanted to convey here is let's keep it positive. This thing can go on as long as we don't kill it internally. We start too much drama around these parts, lurkers are going to come out of the woodwork to swoop in and make this just another forum for hate and trolling, which makes more work for the mods, and some people might not ever return. We have lost some damn fine authors and people here, some through just running their course, but many through negativism and/or infighting. Just remember, if someone is being a dink, step back and take a deep breath and don't take the bait. Let's keep Oppo awesome for the future.

Kinja'd!!!

Ok that is my treatise for the morning. Thanks for being great Oppo, and a place where I can go to blow off steam or learn something about that glue that keeps us all together, cars.

Kinja'd!!!

Oh, and don't be a dick.

I promise only to be a dick if I think it's going to be really funny. Okay, scratch that. What I mean is, I will keep my shenanigans cheeky and fun, rather than letting my shenanigans be cruel and tragic. That would make them... not shenanigans at all, really. Evil shenanigans.

That time of year again, is it? Thankfully I missed all the drama this time around...

Congrats on moving up in the real world, and thanks for all the French rally cars!

Congrats on the new gig, whatever it may be.

I really enjoy this rock I live under. I managed to miss almost all of the drama. I still say rule #2 is the best rule of all.

Seriously, don't be a dick.

Okay, seriously, stop it.

I like you, I think you are a great member of the community, and I can very clearly see that you mean nothing but the absolute best at all times. And I appreciate that more than you know; you're one of the most positive people around here.

But posts like this... they don't help.

Think of it as constantly picking at a scab, and then wondering why the hell it won't heal. Well, if you leave it alone and let it do its thing rather than pick at it every day, it'll heal before you know it. The same concept applies here. Look, shit happens. Someone gets a little too frustrated, a topic gets a little too out of hand... whatever. It ain't no thing. We handle it in the moment as it needs to be handled, and then we move on and put it out of our minds as we keep working to build a more positive place. In time, we forget about our little quarrels, move on, post car-related shit, and the world spins happily. We were just about there here on Oppositelock.

But when you keep bringing up old fires, you also keep stoking them. You keep them fresh in peoples' minds. You rip that scab open, and all the gooey, disgusting bullshit comes gushing right out again. Stop it. Leave it alone, and let it be. Time and a strong sense of community heals all wounds, and this community in particular is especially resilient - so just leave it to its own devices and let it do what it does best: heal itself.

There's no need to remind the community of that one time, and that other time, and that time beside that that it squabbled and fought. It's aware of it, and perhaps even still smarting a bit. But it will forgive, forget, and move on; if it's allowed to, that is. It's time to allow it to forget and move on.

As for the whole "Fender Vent" idea... I don't like it at all.

Much of the problems that have occurred in the past several months are precisely because people bring whatever negativity they may have here, and "vent" about it. That's not what this place is. That's not what Oppositelock is. We are not a therapeutic community that can solve your (and here I am using "your" and "you" in royal form; not directed at anyone) life problems. We are not a community where random other people can be the internet targets of your stress, anger, frustration, depression, prejudices, etc. We simply are not equipped to handle that. There are places where you can get help for all of those things, and we'll support you in your pursuit of getting that help. But Oppositelock is not the place to get that help; in fact, seeking that sort of help here is unhealthy. Like I said, we aren't therapists. We have no idea what's going on or what to tell you. We can't help with that sort of thing. We cannot provide psychiatric help. We're just a bunch of jackasses that share a love of cars and automotive culture. That's as far as it goes.

Again, Oppositelock is not a place to vent, take a shit on others, or seek therapy. We do not condone that here.

Rather, Oppositelock is a positive place that provides us a little escape from our normal lives when we need it, a place where we can screw around, laugh, and revel in our shared obsession with cars and fun little antics. For that reason, I don't like the idea of a "Fender Vent" post. You might argue that it could act as a potential filter for negativity, but that's not the point. The point is that we shouldn't have to filter for negativity in the first place. Oppositelock is a positive place. Check your negativity at the door; you can pick it up again on your way out. But it has no place here, and I won't make a post to specifically condone it and allow it any place whatsoever here in Oppositelock.

Keep Oppositelock positive by closing the lid on past negativity and working on bringing nothing but positivity to this place going forward.

Cool?

Cool.

Out of sight, out of mind. Moving on now.

It was totally not my intention to keep picking at the scab, more to remind people to be thinking forward and positively, and let the sleeping dogs lie or die.

One thing however, with the way you put it, I am editing out my fender vent piece of the puzzle. Thank you for your response.

I know. I know you have great intentions, and I appreciate that. I'm not upset with you or anything. I'm just trying to point out that sometimes, when we're trying to pass the word to let sleeping dogs lie, we sometimes make so much noise that we wake up the dogs in the process.

The community had just about forgotten about it all and moved on... and I don't want it to do a 180 on that.

I'm with you on keeping the venting to a minimum, but I also think it's healthy to talk about things like this. There's a fine line between "forgive and forget" and "let's pretend that never happened," the latter of which is obviously not the best way of doing business. Posts that are like "what happened before?" hours after a controversy are unnecessary, but I don't think this is causing any problems. All he's saying is let's keep the positivity up.
